UK number plate types, compared properly

Every styled plate on the UK market comes down to how the character is built: printed and domed in resin, cut from solid acrylic, faceted, or finished with a green flash for zero-emission vehicles. These guides explain the differences, what each style genuinely costs, and the rules that keep a plate MOT-safe.

    How to choose

Budget first: 3D gel is the cheapest raised finish and the most forgiving to live with. If you want hard, squared-off character edges and a real shadow line, 4D laser-cut acrylic is the step up, with 3mm for a subtle profile and 5mm for a bold one. Hex sits above both and suits technical, wrapped or performance builds. If your vehicle is fully electric or hydrogen powered, any of those finishes can carry the green flash.

Whatever style you choose, the legal test is the same: Charles Wright font, 79mm characters, legal spacing, solid black characters on the correct reflective background, and the supplier's name, postcode and BS AU 145e mark on the plate. Every supplier listed on Compare Plates is registered with the DVLA and must see proof of entitlement and photographic ID before manufacturing.
